Colin Powell to tout Obama's national service call
By Mark Memmott, USA TODAY
Former secretary of State Colin Powell, a Republican who crossed party lines to endorse Democratic candidate Barack Obama during the presidential election, is expected at a 12:15 p.m. ET news conference in Washington today. He'll be calling attention to President-elect Obama's idea for a national day of "service" on Jan. 19 -- one day before Obama is sworn into office.
Update at 12:03 p.m. ET. They're creating USAservice.org:
The Obama-Biden transition team just put out more details about what Powell will be discussing. It's a "Renew America Together" initiative that asks Americans "to make an ongoing commitment to serve their communities and their country," the statement says. And part of the initiative is a new website -- USAservice.org -- that "makes it easy to organize and post service projects, connecting grassroots volunteers with non-profit organizations and community projects in their area."
