Hard drugs truly impair judgement over the long term. Getting drunk is a short term affair by comparison. True some folks are addicted to alcohol and cannot quit. But, hard drugs are by definition addictive. Ask someone who has been addicted to things like meth if it is possible to function as the drug takes complete control of your body.
Restrictive laws offend my libertarian tendencies, but the destructive aspects of hard drugs make for a powerful case.
