Chicago police shot and killed two armed men in separate incidents on the West and South sides Sunday evening, authorities said.
In the first shooting, gang enforcement officers responded about 6:30 p.m. to the 2800 block of West Polk Street in the Lawndale neighborhood on the West Side after someone reported seeing armed men on the block, according to a preliminary statement from Police News Affairs.
The officers spotted people matching descriptions they had been given, and one of them began running when officers approached, according to the statement.
At least one officer gave chase, police said. As the person ran through a gangway, he produced a weapon and refused the officer's order to drop it, police said.
"The offender then went to an elevated position and pointed his weapon in the direction of the officer," according to the police statement.
The officer had chased the man up the stairs of a home, according to Pat Camden, a spokesman for the police union. When the man pointed the gun at the officer, the officer fatally shot him, according to Camden and the police department.
"You got an offender with a gun. Instead of dropping the gun and surrendering, he points the gun at the police and the officer has no choice," Camden said.
The man, identified as Roshad McIntosh, 18, was pronounced dead at Mount Sinai Hospital.
The officer was not injured, and police recovered a 9 mm handgun at the scene, Camden said.
Near the scene of the Polk Avenue shooting, about 30 police officers stood next to each other behind red police tape while about 50 to 75 people were scattered on the other side.
In a separate shooting shortly before 9 p.m. Sunday, rookie police officers on a foot patrol arrived in the 900 block of East 80th Street in the East Chatham neighborhood on the South Side moments after three people were wounded in a shootout between two people, according to police.
Two officers turned a corner after hearing gunfire and saw a teenager holding a gun and standing over someone who was on the ground, Camden said.
The teenager, believed to be 17 or 18, pointed it at police and one of the officers fired at him, Camden said.
The man was fatally wounded.
The man who had been on the ground nearby also had a gun and had apparently been shot by the teenager standing near him, police said. He was taken Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn in critical condition, Camden said.
The ages and conditions of the two others wounded in the initial shootout, before police arrived, were not immediately released.
