The reality on the street does not match the left's rhetoric on racial profiling

NEWARK OUTLINES PLAN TO CURB VIOLENCE AFTER WEEKEND OF AT LEAST 10 SHOOTINGS

Officials in Newark are taking steps to curb violence after a weekend of shootings that left at least 11 people shot, three of them fatally.

The city is beefing up its police presence in a virtual state of emergency.

"What we're going to do is bunker down in areas where we know crime is committed and we're going to improve those areas, then we're going to move on to other areas in the city, once we get those areas into a place where they become self-sufficient," said Mayor Ras Baraka.

The immediate steps to crack down on crime include opening a new police precinct in the Central Ward to respond more quickly to crime.

Police are going to aggressively target narcotic hot spots and known dealers. Police patrols will increase and there will be more overtime. Police patrols will go from 10 to 12 hours.

"Today we're going to move through the community with the special forces that we have. Today we're opening up a new precinct," said Baraka.

The latest shooting took place just after 3 a.m. Monday. One person was shot in an apartment complex on Hawkins Court, and was hospitalized with non life-threatening injuries.

Three people were shot at about 7 p.m. Sunday night on the 600 block of South 20th Street.

One of the victims died. He has been identified as Jamil Harris, 25, of Newark. The two others are in stable condition at University Hospital.

Detectives are trying to figure out if those incidents are linked to two deadly shootings Saturday.

A 23-year old man was gunned down on the 700 block of South 20th Street.

About three hours later, someone opened fire outside the Oasis 93 bar on South Orange Avenue.

38-year old Lisa Parker of Orange died at the scene. Three other people were wounded.

No arrests have been made in any of the shootings.
