Al Nusra is a front for, and has openly aligned with, al-Qaeda in Syria – which is essentially ISIS.
It is not a secret that Turkish Prime Minister Recep Erdogan has tried to deliver the maximum benefit to ISIS (in Northern Syria) in direct opposition to the Kurds who are trying to formulate their own independent nation of Kurdistan. Erdogan views Kurdistan as a proxy for Irans’ growing sphere of influence.
Erdogan opposes Iran for many ideological reasons, but arguably most of all because he sees Iran’s growing influence as a threat to his own political ambitions to lead a new Ottoman Empire.
In my opinion Erdogan views his envisioned construct as most possible with a constituency of: ISIS, The Muslim Brotherhood, Al Nusra (al-Qaeda) and various other segments of Sunni Islam including the Palestinian Authority, vis-à-vis Hamas. Erdogan, like Obama, has more grand aspirations than his own territory – all of his prior behavior aligns with this perspective.
So it comes as no surprise to see Turkey’s Erdogan take the opportunity provided by the distractions of both Yemen and Iraq, to act against one of Iran’s benefactors in Syria, namely Assad.
SYRIA – A Syrian military source accused Turkey on Monday of helping Islamist rebels to stage an assault on Idlib, a provincial capital which fighters seized at the weekend.
The source declined to comment on the situation in Idlib, citing security considerations, but a monitoring group has confirmed the Al-Qaida linked Nusra Front and allies now control Idlib and said the Syrian air force bombed the city on Monday.
The fall of Idlib, 30 km (20 miles) from the Turkish border, marks only the second time in the Syrian civil war that Damascus has lost control of a provincial capital. The first was Raqqa, which the ultra-radical Islamic State group has turned into the de facto capital of its self-declared caliphate.
[…] The setback for Assad in Idlib coincides with growing tension over Yemen between Saudi Arabia and Iran, one of Assad’s firmest backers. Turkey has come out in support of a Saudi-led military intervention against Iranian-allied Houthis in Yemen.
The Syrian conflict, in which an estimated 220,000 people have been killed, has been a major arena for Iranian-Saudi rivalry.
The Nusra Front’s influence in northwestern Syria has been expanding at the expense of mainstream rebel groups, some of which received U.S. military support. It is a rival of Islamic State, an Al-Qaida offshoot that has seized territory in both Syria and Iraq.
Ahrar al-Sham issued a statement urging the people of Idlib to help fighters run the city and saying they were not seeking to set up an Islamic emirate. (read more)
Egypt’s Fattah el-Sisi has been the most vocal opponent to Turkey’s Erdogan because in action, and in real consequential terms, Turkey has provided a safe haven for the Muslim Brotherhood.
The Muslim Brotherhood is ISIS, and this bears continual repetition because the Western media attempt to conceal this reality at every turn.
The Muslim Brotherhood is ISIS.
The Brotherhood in Egypt was politically leveraged by Mohamad al-Zawahiri. Mohamad is the brother of Ayman al-Zawahiri, al-Qaeda’s #1 man who took over as leader for AQAP when Osama Bin Laden was in hiding, then killed.
When Hosni Mubarak was removed (Islamist Spring), the Muslim Brotherhood opened the jails in Egypt to release all of their ideological brethren. Mohamad al-Zawahiri was one of the first freed. [Remember the 9/11/12 protest for the release of the blind sheik – that was Mohamad]
Zawahiri then activated his group politically and gave rise to Morsi. Morsi then began instituting Sharia Law in Egypt.
That led to the Egyptian people recognizing they were snookered by The Brotherhood, the electorate turned to General Fattah el-Sisi for help. General Sisi took the reigns and using the military dispatched Morsi and the Muslim Brotherhood. Zawahiri was put back in Jail.
♦ The nation of Qatar is the bank for The Brotherhood. Hence the Brotherhood members fled to Qatar until el-Sisi was able to convince the Gulf Arab Countries that those members were going to be trouble (they did become ISIS) if not dealt with.
The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), with the full endorsement of Saudi’s King Abdullah (now deceased), coordinated their agreement with Sisi. What is now known as the “Arab Coalition”, those fighting for control/stability of Yemen (Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Saudi Arabia, Egypt), was the GCC group who leveraged Qatar to get rid of the Brotherhood.
The Brotherhood left Qatar and headed to Turkey where they were given safe-haven by Recep Erdogan. Erdogan is in alignment with the radical Islamist groups.
The GCC states ( Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia) along with Egypt and Jordan are more moderate states and do not support the extremist Sunni’s (ISIS, Brotherhood et al). However, the moderates align with Turkey in opposition to Shia Iran.
