How do they know he was deranged and not a racist?

Deranged man attacks tourist during subway rush hour

A Swedish tourist was assaulted by a deranged man aboard a Brooklyn train, police said.
The victim, 29, was on the A train near Euclid and Pitkin avenues when the suspect sliced her in the neck with a sharp object around 5:20 p.m. Monday, according to cops.
She was treated at Jamaica Hospital for non-life-threatening injuries and later released, cops said.
Sources said no words were exchanged between the two before the vicious attack.
She missed her flight but cops couldn’t immediately say if she was still in the country.
The man is about 25 to 30 and was last seen wearing a baseball cap and black sweatpants.
He fled out of the subway in an unknown direction.
In February, a Brooklyn man was arrested for a string of slashings in Union Square.
Derrick McLeod pulled out a box cutter on two straphangers and sliced them in the face on a northbound No. 4 train near Bleeker Street, cops said.
He then slashed a homeless man nearby when he refused to give him $2.
In April, four Swedish cops from the Stockholm Police Department broke up a brawl aboard a Manhattan train.
