It could easily be the most Australian video on the Internet, and it’s made Ebony Churchill famous for the day.
The video shows a fearless and determined koala chasing down a quad bike ridden by Churchill, 31, as she worked on a farm in Heywood, Victoria, over the weekend.
“I was just bringing the cows up for a milking,” she told News.com.au. That’s when the dramatic chase unfolded.
Fortunately for the rest of us, Churchill, who hails from Adelaide but now lives in Portland, Victoria, had the presence of mind to whip out her phone and record the koala’s super effort.
In the footage, Churchill is audibly concerned about the animal’s pursuit and appears to be quite frightened as the bike fails to escape its clutches.
“Far out, it’s coming!”
“Get away! Get away!” she can be heard yelling as the koala gains ground on the vehicle.
“Where the bloody hell is it?” she says aloud to herself after jumping off the bike. “Oh my God, it’s on the freaking bike … Piss off!” she yells.
The video ends with the koala proudly clinging to the back tire of the bike, at which point Churchill left him and the bike alone and continued on foot.
Defending her reaction, Churchill said, “They’ve got really sharp claws.”
“I was amazed he wanted that much attention,” she said. “I didn’t expect him to keep chasing.”
She posted the video to her Facebook page on Saturday evening and it has since become a worldwide hit.
She has been floored by the level of interest and has lost count of how many people from different countries have contacted her, including interest from China and Japan.
“I’ve been at work so I’ve been handing them [the media requests] off to my sister,” she said.
“He’s a pretty cute fluffball,” she said when speculating over why the video has proved so popular.
At the time of writing, it has been viewed over 1.8 million times, and counting.
Her Facebook page is filled with comments from friends relishing her 15 minutes of fame — something which Churchill said has left her feeling quite embarrassed.
One friend joked the new-found level of celebrity could spur a TV series called “Farmer Wants a Koala.”
