Fatal drive-by shooting outside Boys and Girls Club

Three people were killed and four wounded in Rochester when a gunman opened fire in a drive-by shooting after a basketball game late Wednesday, officials said.

The gunman began shooting at a crowd that had gathered after the game at the Boys and Girls Club at 500 Genesee St., Rochester Police Chief Michael Ciminelli told the Democrat and Chronicle.

The names of the victims have not been released pending notification of their relatives.

The injuries of the four Rochester men do not appear to be life-threatening, the Associated Press reported.

The incident, which happened shortly after 11 p.m., did not appear to be connected to the game, Ciminelli said.

“We have a very active investigation going,” he told the paper. “We are bringing every resource that we have to bear on this. We will run this down and find out who did this. This was an outrageous act. We intend to find out who did it and bring them to justice.”

Doug Ackley, head of Rochester Programs for the Center for Teen Empowerment, said one of the dead victims was a 19-year-old who had worked with him, the paper reported.

Early Thursday, hundreds of people congregated at the scene, some crying, hugging and talking with others after the attack.

Michael Cotton told the Democrat and Chronicle he knew one of the dead.

“We were mutual friends. We always spoke when we saw each other,” he said. “Of course, it hurts. That’s somebody that I speak to on a daily basis. That’s going to affect me for a little while. This is not my first one. It’s kind of ridiculous now. You see how many people are out here. I’m sure the people that did see something aren’t going to talk or anything, because they’re just too loyal.”
