Man falls to his death while fleeing massive police raid
A 21-year-old man fatally plummeted from the window ledge of a Bronx building during an attempt to escape police during a massive gang takedown in the borough early Wednesday, police sources said.
Authorities had just arrested a man in a sixth-floor apartment on East 236th Street in Wakefield shortly after 6 a.m. when they spotted Geovanni Martin standing on the fire escape during the raid by cops and the feds, sources said.
Cops ordered Martin back inside and he complied, but then he went out another window on the sixth floor.
Officers saw him hanging from the window by his hands. He plummeted to the ground when he could no longer hold on, sources said.
Martin, who was not wanted in the warrant execution, was taken to Jacobi Hospital, but he could not be saved. Another man staying in the same apartment was wanted in the raid and was arrested. Their relationship wasn’t clear.
Investigators determined that Martin was wanted for at least five robberies in the Bronx, sources said. In some cases, he wielded a knife when ripping off his victims, who were between the ages of 43 and 62, for cash and jewelry, sources said.
The police raid, which involved federal law enforcement agencies, was part of a takedown of more than 100 violent gang members who wreaked havoc on the borough for years.
Authorities nabbed 120 thugs from two rival street gangs known as 2Fly YGz and the Big Money Bosses who are responsible for at least eight homicides — including the murders of a 92-year-old woman and a 15-year-old boy, officials said.
The takedown is the largest in city history, according to officials.
