Guardian slashes its US staff after overseas cuts
Guardian News & Media, which has already cut its London staffing by 20 percent, may be making much steeper reductions in the US, where up to two dozen journalists may be out of jobs.
Negotiations are under way between the Guardian and the News Media Guild over the size of the cuts, sources said.
“We were deeply disappointed to learn of the company’s [proposed cuts], considering the optimistic financial projections made to us within the last year,” said a statement from the union. “However, management has committed to working with [us] to decide how cuts will be made.”
Last week, the Guardian filed a WARN notice with New York. It stated that the company had laid off 12 people on its 124-person New York staff.
A spokesperson said the cuts included only personnel from the commercial and business sides and none of the 80 editorial staffers — so far.
A Guardian US spokesperson said the company, which posted an operating loss of $89.4 million in the last fiscal year, wants “to break even at an operating level within the next three years and that no part of the business can be immune from tough action.”
