Marion Barry says he ‘never smoked crack’
Former Washington, DC, Mayor Marion Barry claims he’s never smoked crack cocaine — despite a widely circulated surveillance video that showed him lighting up a pipe and inhaling.
Barry made the stunning claim on MSNBC during an interview hyping his new book, “Mayor for Life,” according to the Washington Times.
“Never smoked crack — as simple as that,” said Barry.
The MSNBC interviewer challenged Barry, now a DC council member, to explain the infamous 1990 FBI surveillance footage of him smoking a crack pipe at the Vista Hotel.
“The federal government never proved there was a crack pipe,” Barry told the station. “Jurors didn’t believe it.”
Barry served time in jail and lost his post as DC mayor as a result of the bust — in which where he famously denounced the woman who brought him to a hotel room wired by the feds.
The enraged Barry muttered over and over, “Bitch set me up . . . . I shouldn’t have come up here . . . goddamn bitch” — references to the woman who lured him to the hotel, former girlfriend Hazel Diane “Rasheeda” Moore.
Barry has always blamed his downfall on a racially motivated FBI entrapment. But he has acknowledged he’s made mistakes.
“That’s a little sliver of time in my whole career. That ’90s is over,” Barry said. “I want people to judge me by my entire life.”
