Marseille train station attack sees knifeman shot dead by army after stabbing two women to death
Cops scrambled to Saint Charles station in southern France after initial reports of a knifeman and gunfire
A KNIFEMAN has been gunned down by security services at Saint Charles train station in Marseille - after stabbing two a woman to death and slitting another's throat.
One woman was stabbed in the stomach during the horrific onslaught, as the attacker shouted "Allahu Akbar", Arabic for God is great, according to a police source.
Cops scrambled to the scene in southern France, sparking an immediate mass evacuation, after the attacker began the terrifying onslaught.
Confirming the injuries and fatalities, Oliver de Mazieres, a local official said, "two victims have been stabbed to death".
Police sources claim the incident is likely to be a terror attack, although this is yet to be confirmed.
Locals have been asked to stay away from the area, describing the scene as a "major police incident".
Anti-terror officials have said they launched an investigation into the "killings linked to a terrorist organisation".
Before highlighting the incident as an "attempted killing of a public official".
French interior minister Gerard Collomb announced he was rushing to Marseilles, on Twitter.
The tragic news comes as France is still on high alert following the string of terror attacks which began in January 2015.
