A newspaper reporter changed his Twitter profile to “former newspaper reporter” after he admitted making a mistake in one “stupid, regrettable” tweet about the mass murderer in the Capital Gazette attack.
Here’s what happened
Conor Berry posted an ill-advised tweet sarcastically identifying the killed in the Capital Gazette attack as a Trump supporter.
“Shooter who killed 4 people at Annapolis newspaper dropped his #MAGA hat on newsroom floor before opening fire,” he tweeted, with a photo of the “Make America Great Again” design that was made famous in the Trump presidential campaign.
The tweet, now deleted, was screencapped by many and floated around social media to substantiate the bias of the media against President Donald Trump.
Berry divulged on Friday that he resigned from his position because of the “stupid, regrettable” tweet.
“Folks, My 21-year career as a ‘journalist,’ a fancy term that makes my skin crawl, frankly, came to a screeching halt yesterday with one stupid, regrettable tweet,” he said.
“Can’t take it back; wish I could,” he added. “My sincere apologies to all good, hardworking reporters and to POTUS supporters.”
Berry indicated in further posts that his tweet was meant to be sarcastic, but it was taken as fact by many.
The attack on the newsroom at the Capital Gazette appears to have been motivated by the killer’s anger over coverage he received and considered unfair. There is no indication that he was a Trump supporter or was encouraged by the president’s attacks on the press.
