Graydon Carter plans mini-empire at Fifth Avenue co-op

Legendary former Vanity Fair editor Graydon Carter and his wife, Anna Scott Carter, have bought a Greenwich Village co-op for $3.42 million, according to city records filed Monday.Vice Media founder Shane Smith sells

The home, at 40 Fifth Ave. near West 11th Street, features two bedrooms and two bathrooms, along with original details like a woodburning fireplace and beamed ceilings. There are also oversize windows, built-ins, a kitchen with a breakfast bar and a large home office.
If that unit seems small for such a big personality, it may be the first of two purchases. A second property in the building is also in contract, and sources say that Carter is also the buyer of that unit.
That co-op in contract had been marketed as a four-bedroom duplex — when combined with the unit that the Carters just bought — asking $6.99 million.
Carter will indeed be combining both units into a duplex, sources add. The final sale price for the second apartment hasn’t yet hit public records.
The couple still own a grand townhouse on Bank Street that Carter had originally bought with his first wife for $2 million in 1998.
Listing brokers Clayton Orrigo and Stephen Ferrara, of Compass, declined to comment.
Carter could not be reached by publication time.
