This massive stash of cocaine is just a fraction of one of the largest drug busts in history
Federal officials showed off thousands of pounds of cocaine — which amounted to only a fraction of the drug seized from a ship at a Philadelphia port — inside the city’s US Custom House on Friday.
In total, authorities seized 35,000 pounds, or 17 and a half tons, of cocaine worth $1.1 billion in the takedown, making it one of the largest drug busts in US history, officials said.
When stacked end to end, the bricks of cocaine confiscated this week from a ship at the Packer Marine Terminal would stretch about 2.5 miles, officials said.
“This is a massive, stunning amount of cocaine,” US Attorney William McSwain said Friday during a high-security press conference at the government building where the stacks of the drug were piled high, The Philadelphia Inquirer reported.
Six of the ship’s crew members have been arrested and charged with conspiracy to possess cocaine aboard a ship.
