School where suspects in Tessa Majors killing attend falls short on academics
The three boys suspected in Tessa Majors’ murder are students at a school that lags far behind the rest of the city in academics.
PS 180 on West 120th Street is steps from Morningside Park, where the Barnard freshman, 18, was stabbed Wednesday.
But despite smaller-than-typical class sizes and a principal who professes a “culture of care” on the school website, the academic results at the K-8 school fall short.
Only 12 percent of the middle-school students tested at or above grade level on the 2018 state math exam. Citywide, the average is 46 percent.
And just 26 percent tested at or above grade level on the state English exam. The citywide average is 51 percent.
The student population is mixed. Just over half are black, 28 percent are Hispanic, 13 percent are white and 3 percent are Asian.
The 2018-19 NYC School Survey found 68 percent of PS 180 students say bullying happens most or all of the time there. And 70 percent say they felt safe in the halls, bathrooms and locker room, compared to 84 percent citywide.
Principal Jeneca Parker refused to comment on Saturday.
