Multiple US Marshals shot, wounded in the Bronx

Two deputy U.S. Marshals were shot and a suspect killed early Friday in the Bronx during a wild exchange of gunfire with a man wanted for shooting a state trooper in Massachusetts, officials said.

The marshals, with the New York/New Jersey Regional Fugitive Task Force, were executing a warrant inside 4085 Ely Avenue in Wakefield, searching for Andre Sterling, 35, wanted for shooting a trooper in the hand during a traffic stop last week, according to the marshals’ office and police sources.

As investigators entered, Sterling opened fire on them with a handgun, and was in turn fatally shot, the sources said.

One marshal was hit in the leg, and another was struck in the arm and leg, according to the marshals’ office. They were taken to Jacobi Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries.

An NYPD warrant detective who was on the periphery for security injured his leg when he went into the building upon hearing shots, according to the sources. 

A second suspect, a 53-year-old man who lived in the apartment, was taken into custody for questioning, police sources said.

“I heard a number of shots, I can’t say how many,” said one resident who only gave his first name, Anthony. “Then I heard sirens, a lot of them — crazy non-stop. It seems like the cops were coming to the scene. I saw four helicopters — three stationary and the fourth moving around the area where the shots came from.”

“Honestly, it’s a good neighborhood,” he added. “It’s the first I’ve seen something like this.”

Sterling shot a Massachusetts State Police trooper around 11:30 p.m. Nov. 20 during a traffic stop in Hyannis, police there said.

Trooper John Lennon, 28, suffered a non-life-threatening gunshot wound to the hand, according to WCVB.

Sterling, a native of Jamaica, was also wanted in Wyoming on narcotics charges, Massachusetts state cops said.
