Nearly 30 congressional Democrats vote against providing 24-hour protection to SCOTUS members

On Tuesday, the U.S. House of Representatives passed a bill to increase security for the homes of Supreme Court justices and their immediate families. 

The bill was fast-tracked through Congress after a lone wolf actor was arrested outside Associate Justice Brett Kavanaugh’s personal residence with the intention of assassinating the justice.

The legislation is now headed to President Biden’s desk for final approval, and if signed into law, it will authorize the provision of 24-hour protection of the Supreme Court justices and their families. Fox News reported that various members of the executive and legislative branches already receive similar protections. 

The House of Representatives voted 396-27 to approve the measure that had already been passed with unanimous consent in the United States Senate. The Senate’s measure passed in May after a leaked draft of a majority opinion indicated that the Supreme Court intends to overturn Roe v. Wade.

The 27 congressmen who voted against the bill were all Democrats. Reportedly, they voted no on the grounds that the bill needed to also include protections for court staff, including clerks and their families.

The far-left, self-proclaimed democratic socialist Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) took to social media to boast about initially blocking the bill and slowing down its passage. 

In an Instagram video, the congresswoman said, “I wake up this morning and I start to hear murmurs that there is going to be an attempt to pass the Supreme Court supplemental protection bill the day after gun safety legislation for schools and kids and people is stalled.”

The "squad" member said, “Oh, so we can pass protections for us and here easily, right? But we can’t pass protections for everyday people? I think not.”

Ocasio-Cortez was joined by 26 other Democratic House Members to vote no.

The other no votes were cast by Reps. Joys Beaty of Ohio, Jamaal Bowman of New York, Cori Bush of Missouri, Veronica Escobar of Texas, Adriano Espaillat of New York, Chuy Garcia of Illinois, Sylvia Garcia of Texas, Joshua Gottheimer of New Jersey, Raul Grijalva of Arizona, Steven Horsford of Nevada, Pramila Jayapal of Washington, Brenda Lawrence of Michigan, Barbara Lee of California, Tom Malinowski of New Jersey, Marie Newman of Illinois, Bill Pascrell of New Jersey, Donald Payne of New Jersey, Ed Perlmutter of Colorado, Ayanna Pressley of Massachusetts, Mikie Sherrill of New Jersey, Albo Sires of New Jersey, Rashida Tlaib of Michigan, Norma Torres of California, Nydia Velazquez of New York, Maxine Water of California, and Bonnie Watson Coleman of New Jersey.
