Sgt. sues landlord, claims discrimination
BOSTON — A National Guardsman who served in Iraq, Afghanistan and Guantanamo Bay has sued a Boston landlord and claiming she denied him a chance to rent an apartment because his military service was at odds with her peace activism.
Sgt. Joel Morgan said the two-bedroom apartment in Dorchester was perfect for him. But he claims Janice Roberts told him in a voicemail that renting to him would be a conflict.
Morgan tells the Boston Herald “it was like a spit in the face.”
The suit filed last week in Suffolk Superior Court alleges Roberts violated state law prohibiting landlords from refusing to rent to veterans.
Roberts denies discrimination. She says 30 people showed an interest in the apartment, Morgan never filled out an application, and there were questions about his ability to pay.
