Gridlock at LaGuardia forces travelers to walk to terminals
LaGuardia Airport’s roads filled to capacity on Thursday, with travelers reporting that they were forced to hop out of cars and buses and walk to catch their flights.
Video posted to Twitter by user @DCarrington01 showed travelers of all ages lugging their bags through snarled traffic.
“People are really hopping out the whips,” the person taking the video says.
Port Authority officials attributed the congestion both to ongoing construction at the airport and yesterday’s severe weather, which caused 300-plus flight cancellations at LaGuardia alone.
“We’re at the peak of construction and the peak of summer travel,” said agency spokesperson Alana Calmi.
“We’re hoping that [the traffic] will subside in the next couple of hours,” she added.
As of 6:20 p.m, Thursday was the second-busiest in the airport’s 80 year history — and on track to reach number one, Calmi said.
Twitter was awash with reports from frustrated travelers stuck waiting at the airport’s runways, terminals and parking lots.
“Disaster commute to #LGA,” wrote user @ReelMaggie. “Plane @SouthwestAir boarding in 30 minutes and in gridlock traffic less than one mile from terminal!”
