A powerful congressional committee is demanding federal financial records tied to a Maine nonprofit that has come under scrutiny following allegations of MaineCare fraud and whistleblower complaints.

U.S. House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer (R-KY) has requested Suspicious Activity Reports from Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent related to Gateway Community Services, a Maine-based organization that billed MaineCare $28.8 million between 2019 and 2024.

Gateway has recently drawn public attention after a former employee alleged improper billing practices that may constitute fraud against the state’s Medicaid program. 

Gateway Communities representatives in both their Portland and Lewiston offices declined to comment to the Maine Wire today when we visited their offices in person about this escalation by Rep. Comer and the OverSsght Committee.

Senate Republican Leader Trey Stewart (R-Aroostook) said Republicans have repeatedly warned about waste and fraud within MaineCare, accusing legislative Democrats of refusing to include safeguards and audits in the state budget.

“How much malfeasance has to come to light before Governor Mills and State House Democrats recognize there is a problem here?” Sen. Stewart said.

Assistant Senate Republican Leader Matthew Harrington (R-York) said he previously called on Governor Janet Mills (D) and state leaders to investigate Gateway following the whistleblower’s allegations.

“Maine state government needs to be honest and accountable to Maine taxpayers,” Harrington said. “Welfare fraud strips resources from Maine families that truly need our safety net.”

House Republican Leader Billy Bob Faulkingham (R-Winter Harbor) warned the situation could escalate into a historic scandal if the allegations are substantiated.

“If we have even a tenth of the fraud that occurred in Minnesota by Somali NGOs, this may be the biggest fraud scandal in Maine history,” Rep. Faulkingham said. “We need investigations now.”

Assistant House Republican Leader Katrina Smith (R-Palermo) said the administration and legislative Democrats are ignoring findings from the state auditor, calling the inaction irresponsible.

“That is irresponsible and hurts the people who truly rely on assistance programs and the overburdened taxpayers who pay for them,” Rep. Smith said.

The Oversight Committee’s request for Treasury records signals a growing federal interest in the Gateway controversy, as calls for investigations continue to mount at the State House.
