Remember Steven Rattner, President Obama's first auto industry czar? His tenure as the official liason between Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner and the Auto Industry Task Force that guided Obama's takeover General Motors and Chrysler was short-lived, owning to revelations of investigations by the SEC and New York Attorney General Andrew Cuomo.

The investigations center around allegations first reported soon after Rattner's appointment that he paid bribes to win business for Quadrangle from the New York state pension system. Quadrangle has since paid $12 million in fines in a settlement with state and federal officials, and publicly condemned its founder's activities as "inappropriate, wrong and unethical."

Rattner, however, was not included in the firm's settlement because, according to The New York Times, he has been fighting the SEC's move to ban him from Wall Street for three years.

Interestingly, not until the 14th paragraph of its story in Monday's edition, did the Times note that Rattner and his wife, Maureen White, are long-time Democratic fund raising heavy hitters. And not until the 15th graph did the Times acknowledge that Rattner was a Times reporter before going Wall Street and getting very rich indeed.

But, as always. the Center for Responsive Politics (CRP) and its OpenSecrets.org web site, provide the full back story on the Rattners and their massive giving over the past two decades to Democratic candidates, campaign committees, and causes.

According to CRP, the Rattners have given more than $1.8 million in such contributions since 1990:

"Top Rattner/White party committee recipients since the 1990 election cycle include the Democratic National Committee ($939,356), Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee ($261,782) and Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee ($65,500).

"Among political candidates, Hillary Clinton ($37,594), former Vice President Al Gore ($36,000) and Harold Ford Jr. ($18,600) top the Rattner/White contribution roster, which includes 150 candidates in all since the 1990 election cycle, the Center's research shows."

Just since 2007, the Rattners gave "$36,000 to the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, $14,250 to the Democratic National Committee, $4,600 to President Barack Obama and $2,300 to Vice President Joe Biden," CRP reported.

"Other prominent Democrats recently receiving campaign money from Rattner include secretary of state and former Sen. Hillary Clinton (D-N.Y.), Sen. Mary Landrieu (D-La.), Sen. Max Baucus (D-Mont.), Sen. Jeanne Shaheen (D-N.H.), Rep. Charles Rangel (D-N.Y.) and White House chief of staff and former Rep. Rahm Emanuel (D-Ill.)," according to CRP.
