Four armed gang suspects -- including two teens charged as adults -- pleaded guilty Wednesday to weapons charges stemming from a traffic stop last month in Novato.

A fifth suspect, 29-year-old Francisco Pazcedillos, refused to take a similar plea deal, thus risking more than 15 years in prison if convicted at trial.

"He would not take an offer no matter how good it was," said his defense attorney, Robin Brennan. "He's not guilty and would not say he was."

The defendants, all San Rafael residents, were arrested after Novato police stopped their car Oct. 23 at Sunset Parkway at Midway Boulevard. After seeing a baseball bat concealed between the seats, police searched the car and reported finding a loaded sawed-off shotgun, another unloaded shotgun and a machete.

Prosecutors filed numerous weapons and gang-related charged against Pazcedillos; Edwin Manuel Gonzalez, 20; Maynor Lopez-Sajche, 28; Adelson Alonzo Vail, 17, and Leonel Velasquez, 17.

Pazcedillos, who was driving the car, was also charged with drug possession.

A preliminary examination of the evidence began Tuesday before Judge Terrence Boren, and numerous Novato and San Rafael police officers were subpoenaed to testify.

But on Wednesday morning, Gonzalez, Lopez-Sajche and the two teens accepted plea offers and admitted to felony possession of a deadly weapon and gang affiliation, said Deputy District Attorney Aicha Mievis. Under the deal, they could face

up to three years in prison and will have to register as gang members.

"The juveniles were charged as adults and will be sentenced as adults," Mievis said. A sentencing hearing is pending.

Pazcedillos, who denies gang affiliation as well as the drug and weapons charges, could face up to 15 years and four months in prison after turning down the deal. He continues his preliminary hearing next Wednesday.
