Caroline Kennedy to be US ambassador to Japan: reports
WASHINGTON – The Obama administration has tapped Caroline Kennedy to be the next US ambassador to Japan, according to reports.
Kennedy, 55, a vocal supporter of President Obama and heir of an American political dynasty, has been a frontrunner for the Japan post since at least February.
She hasn’t yet officially taken the job, replacing Obama donor John Roos as the next ambassador to Japan, according to CNN.
Earlier, she was rumored to be in the running for a job as US ambassador to Canada. But the Japan post is a much more plumb assignment.
The Japan post has previously gone to political stars such as former vice president Walter Mondale and legendary Senate Majority Leader Mike Mansfield.
Kennedy, who was an early backer of Obama’s 2008 run for the White House, is among many top supporters in line for ambassadorships.
Kennedy is the daughter of assassinated President John F. Kennedy and his wife Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy.
