The anti individualism of central planning

The wife and I often watch House Hunters international. We record the episodes and watch when we can.

Yesterday, we watched an episode featuring a Canadian woman moving to Kiev in the Ukraine to take a job teaching history. Her family is part Ukrainian but she's three generations removed from those immigrants.

Now for the reason I bring up this story. One of the apartments she was shown that was within her budget was an older unit. A fourth floor walk up, no elevator. The real estate agent mentioned that the apartment had central heating which appeared obvious since there was a radiator in plan view. But, that's not what he meant. Central heating means that a government agency controls the heat in the apartment. There is no way to make it warmer or turn it down. You get what the bureaucracy says you get. The blessings of Communism.

It got me thinking...wouldn't the loony environmentalists love that system. They could make sure the environment was well protected while you either boiled or froze.

The frightful reality is that they are working towards achieving the same level of control over your use of energy. Smart meters and smart thermostats provide the power companies and their bureaucratic masters new found control over our lives.

Will there be a day soon when we must ask some agency in control "can we have a little more heat/cooling, please"?

Remember that there are lots of people out there who care nothing for your freedom to live as you choose. Their goal is some sort of utopian society. One couched in phrases like "sustainable living" or radical egalitarianism.

The immediate problem with that, and I have seen it in Europe and in PA, USA, is that people who are too warm, simply open their windows to regulate the temperature.

After all, their waste of energy costs them nothing--other people are paying for that heat!

This is true for most public housing.

In NYC public housing did not permit the installation of window air conditioning. I don't know if that is the case now but it was so when I lived there. They also did not allow pets.
