Cabrera added that “we’re having a lot of people get through on our flanks that we control because of lack of manpower,” and the apprehension success rate is much lower than reported “the number out there before has been that the border is secure that we’re at 80 percent or 90 percent success rate in apprehensions when it actuality we’re lucky to get into the 30s.”
He also stated that “the Border Patrol, historically, has been good at hiding the true number of people that get away.”
Cabrera added the federal government has been “keeping us in the dark,” and ignoring concerns of agents on the ground as “for the last month we’ve been warning them that we were getting overrun and nobody seems to take note up on the DHS level.” Also, he says “the Border Patrol has done a lot to intimidate agents from speaking out."
Additionally, he reported “we have had people in the past claim to from OTM [other than Mexican] countries when they’re actually Mexican nationals” to avoid being sent back, and process for determining an individual’s country of origin is uncertain.
