Being rich vicariously

This is what an $18K plane ticket gets you

This is what an $18K plane ticket gets you

If during your recent air travels, the slog to your coach seat through the first-class cabin had you feeling a bit envious, then these photos of Singapore Airlines Suites Class might push you over the edge into a full-blown fit of jealousy.
Entrepreneur and former Cal student Derek Low lived the dream for a day when he cashed in enough miles for an $18,400 golden ticket to travel from Singapore to New York City in Suites Class.
On his website, Low writes, “With round-trip tickets costing up to S$23,000 (or US$18,400), it was completely unattainable for most people. Formerly, the only way for an average person to fly in the Suites was to take out a bank loan. And then I remembered that most of my personal net worth exists in frequent flier miles rather than cash.”
As one does these days, Low documented the entire decadent experience to show it off to the rest of us. A day after he posted his photos, Low’s incredible one-way Class Suites trip is being shared everywhere. And for good reason: These images are insane!
Low began his adventure dining on lobster and a burger with foie gras in the ultra-swank Private Room at Singapore Changi Airport. From there, he walked a private jet bridge onto the plane, where he was greeted by name and escorted to his cabin. He chose a middle suite because it can be turned into a double bed, like an actual double bed, not just the miniaturized plane equivalent.
In addition to the bed, other perks included Bose headphones, Givenchy blankets and pajamas, a 5-course meal with more lobster and foie gras and turn-down service. Oh, and lots of champagne.
Expressing a sentiment none of the rest of us has ever felt before, Low sums up his rich-and-famous flight thusly: “I didn’t want to leave the plane.” It’s almost impossible to imagine, but a look through the photos above will prove such an amazing air travel experience is possible — if only you had the cash.
Update: Low’s account of traveling via Singapore Airlines’s Class Suites has sparked some controversy over accusations he paraphrased content from travel blogger Andy Luten. Luten, who posts on Andy’s Travel Blogwrote about Singapore Airline’s luxury suites in 2013; in addition to this post, Luten claims Low took content from two others, also published in 2013.
