An American-based branch of the Qatar-owned TV news channel Al Jazeera put out an insulting Independence Day-pegged video mocking Americans as obese, porn-watching, pill-popping, gun-toting racists.
The 1¹/₂-minute video posted by AJ+, the channel’s San Francisco-based digital-media platform, was sarcastically titled “Americans Show Why USA Is The #1 Country In The World.”
“Not to brag, but we have the most incarcerated people in the world. God bless the prison-industrial complex,” says an AJ+ actor, before another continues.
“Americans consume 80 percent of the world’s painkillers. Makes sense though, right? I mean racism in this country is a big pain in the ass,” the actor says.
The video also admonishes teen moms and, most bizarre of all, US cheese production.
The tasteless video upset hundreds of the channel’s followers on social media, who were particularly baffled that the criticisms were coming from a station owned by a country with some of the most publicized human rights abuses — including limited press freedoms and stoning.
“This sort of seems mean spirited, to be honest,” wrote YouTube user Benjamin Buzbee. “Some of these are important issues, but the spirit of this video . . . seems more sensationalistic than journalistic.”
