Ex-Sharpton friend with mob ties sentenced to over 2 years in prison

A Genovese mob captain who was once buddies with the Rev. Al Sharpton was sentenced Friday to more than two years in prison on a racketeering rap after pleading guilty in March to running an illegal gambling business.
Daniel “Danny” Pagano, 62, son of the late Genovese hit man Joseph Pagano, didn’t speak in court but prosecutors called him “a repeat and career criminal.”
The Manhattan federal court sentencing was interrupted by loud cheers from the parade for the US Women’s World Cup soccer champs in the street below.
“Because of the parade it’s even harder to hear than it usually is, so please be aware of that,” said Judge Ronnie Abrams before sentencing Pagano to 27 months behind bars.
Defense attorney Murray Richman said in court there was no violence in his client’s racketeering.
Pagano has been linked to an unsuccessful mob attempt in the 1980s to recruit Sharpton to distribute illegal drugs.
The Post reported last year that Sharpton was also once a mole with the FBI’s Mafia unit when it was investigating Pagano’s father.
Sharpton has denied being a snitch and any wrongdoing.
Judge Abrams also sentenced Pagano to three years of supervised release and ordered him to pay a $5,000 fine and a $2,000 forfeiture.
Pagano could have faced up to 20 years behind bars if he hadn’t pleaded guilty.
“Pagano’s conviction and sentence reinforce a simple truth: if you join the mob and choose a life of crime, you end up behind bars,” Manhattan US Attorney Preet Bharara said in a statement.
