Nine-year-old Dylan Harbin, aka “Pickle,” is such a big fan of President Donald Trump that his mother SueAnn tried to get him a Trump cake for his birthday. However, according to the
Washington Post, bakeries in the Harbins’ home state of California have refused to make the cake, forcing the mother to bake the cake herself.
Harbin recently got the media’s attention when press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders read his fan letter — in which he volunteered to mow the White House lawn — to President Donald Trump to the media on July 26.
Bill Maher recently made fun of the child’s letter on his HBO show, “Real Time with Bill Maher,” mocking the boy’s spelling errors.
The Washington Post found Dylan after the White House released his letter to the public, and interviewed the family.
According to the Washington Post, SueAnn said that her son’s sudden love of Trump took her by surprise, because she herself is not very political. For his 9th birthday, Dylan wanted a Trump cake that looked like a “Make America Great Again” hat.
The Washington Post reported that SueAnn eventually had to bake the cake herself, as all of the California bakeries she went to refused to make the cake:
But she is always behind her children “100 percent,” so when Pickle asked for “a Donald Trump suit” for his birthday, she bought him one, and when he asked for “a Donald Trump cake,” she made him one herself, because she couldn’t find a bakery willing and able to do it.
The fact that a bakery would not bake a Trump cake while controversy continues to surround Christian bakeries refusing to bake cakes for gay weddings was not lost on CEO and general counsel of the Alliance Defending Freedom, Michael P. Farris.
Farris and the ADF is currently representing baker Jack Phillips, who was forced to attend “re-education” training after refusing to bake a cake for a gay wedding.
“So, should these bakers be forced to design and create a Trump cake?” wrote Farris in a
blog post about the situation.
While Farris was quick to point out the hypocrisy of the total absence of an outcry from the left about a refusal to bake a Trump cake, Farris defended the bakeries, pointing out that this is the principle his organization is fighting for:
As you know, Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF) is representing
Colorado cake artist Jack Phillips in a lawsuit that is reminiscent of this situation. When a same-sex couple walked into Jack’s store and asked him to design a custom cake for their same-sex wedding, he had to politely decline due to his religious beliefs about marriage. So the couple sued him.
Similarly here, cake shops declined Pickle’s order for conscience reasons. Yet, no one on the left is calling for legal action against the cake shops.
And neither should anyone on the right.
The fact is that these cake shops have freedom of speech. They have the right to decline to use their artistic talents to celebrate events or promote messages that violate their beliefs, even if it offends a nice little kid.
Phillips’ case will be reviewed by the Supreme Court in June, according to the
New York Times.
