Sen. Tom Cotton (R., Ark.) responded Friday to violent protests by Palestinians over the Trump administration's decision to recognize Jerusalem as Israel's capital, saying the U.S. will not accept a "rioter's veto" over its policy decisions.
Palestinian leaders called for "days of rage" in the wake of President Donald Trump's announcement about Jerusalem on Wednesday and the plan to move the U.S. embassy there from Tel Aviv.
Over the past two days, thousands of Palestinians have stormed the streets in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip, chanting, throwing stones, rolling burning tires toward troops, and skirmishing with Israeli forces.
"What today's protests show is there would be less violence in the region if the Palestinian Authority didn't promote it—whether by design or inaction," Cotton said in a statement. "Whatever their policy disagreements with the Israeli government, the PA and Fatah have the responsibility to prevent this violence from escalating any further. And the United States will never accept a ‘rioter's veto' against our policies."
Hamas, the militant governing body of the Gaza Strip which the U.S. has designated as a terrorist organization, has called for an uprising like past violent Intifadas to resist Israel.
