Nancy Pelosi says her grandson wishes he was Hispanic, uses story in her case for DACA
House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi gave an eight-hour speech in support of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals recipients on Wednesday that included a storyabout her grandson wishing he was Hispanic.
The California Democrat related that the boy had “a very close friend named Antonio,” who came from Guatemala. “He has beautiful tan skin, beautiful brown eyes and the rest,” she said of her grandson’s friend.
And the 77-year-old Pelosi said she was proud of her grandson’s birthday wish when he blew out the candles on his cake for his sixth birthday.
“I wish I had brown skin and brown eyes like Antonio,” he said.
According to Pelosi, that was a wonderful statement.
“So beautiful, so beautiful,” Pelosi said. “The beauty is in the mix.”
“The face of the future for our country is all-American, and that has many versions,” she added.
What else did she say?
Before talking about her grandson, Pelosi shared a story about a girl who felt like she didn’t fit in with her classmates because she has dark skin and is undocumented. She also shared Bible verses and other stories about undocumented migrants. Her speech included her opposition to a budget deal reached earlier in the day Wednesday that included no action on DACA.
Pelosi has said she will oppose a proposed federal budget package unless it includes legislation to protect the DACA program that President Donald Trump plans to sunset.
The proposed budget package includes other items Democrats have pushed for, including funding to combat the opiod drug crisis, natural disaster relief, better veterans health-care facilities, and medical research.
“This is not an issue that’s going to go away,” Pelosi said. “This is an American value that is deeply felt across the board.”
Lawmakers must agree on a budget and immigration reform by midnight Thursday night to prevent another government shutdown.
