Black doctor taking CA medical board to court over ‘implicit bias’ training: ‘I don’t want to be taught this evil’
Passed in 2019 and in effect since 2022, California law dictates that the required 50 hours of continuing eduction to maintain a medical license must now “include discussion of ‘implicit bias.'” With a career stretching back to 1973, Dr. Marilyn Singleton is now taking the board and its executives to court over alleged constitutional violations that impact her on two fronts.
“I don’t want to be taught this evil, nor do I want to teach it to others,” she wrote as one of the first black students to attend both Stanford University and the University of California San Francisco’s medical school in an op-ed for Fox News.
Joined by Iranian American Dr. Azadeh Khatibi and the Virginia nonprofit organization Do No Harm (DNH) representing its California members, the suit argued that “implicit bias” is in and of itself racist.
In her opinion piece, Singleton, who also teaches continuing education, explained that her license is up for renewal at the end of this year and, “For me, this is a double whammy. Like all physicians, I have to renew my license, and I frequently teach continuing education courses.”
“The concept of ‘implicit bias’ is racist. It assumes that person’s skin color determines how they treat individuals of different races — that our melanin dictates our interactions with them. The California law takes this claim as fact, stating that ‘implicit bias … exists’ and includes the ‘attitudes or internalized stereotypes that affect our perceptions, actions, and decisions,'” the physician wrote.
“It further states that such bias ‘contributes to unequal treatment of people based on race,’ and that implicit bias ‘affect[s] the behavior of physicians and surgeons, nurses, physician assistants, and other healing arts licensees,'” added Singleton.As such, the suit filed Aug. 1 is seeking a permanent injunction and a declaration that California’s code, “on its face and as applied to Plaintiffs, violates the First and Fourteenth Amendments to the U.S. Constitution.”
DNH Chairman Dr. Stanley Goldfarb spoke of the lawsuit with the Washington Examiner and said, “Physicians have free will and act in the best interest of their patients. The idea of unconscious bias states that one acts on those biases, and there’s no evidence of this happening in the medical community.”
“Medical professionals take the Hippocratic oath to do no harm,” he explained further, “and do not need lawmakers or medical organizations to tell them what they should think when providing medical advice to patients.”
While the leftist effort at indoctrination appeared to be targeting white medical practitioners, Singleton emphasized, “I don’t care that I’m not the target. This still represents the kind of racist thinking that was starting to fade 50 years ago. I don’t want to be taught this evil, nor do I want to teach it to others.”
“I hope this lawsuit helps reverse California’s moral decline,” she concluded. “My state was once at the forefront of America’s progress, briskly moving toward equal treatment regardless of race. Now we’re regressing, though our leaders still think it’s progress because a different races is in the crosshairs. Nothing good will come of the new racism, no matter what it’s called or who it targets.”
