Beaverton's controversial Mexican celebration to include other Latin American countries

BEAVERTON -- One day after saying Beaverton would make no changes to its controversial celebration recognizing Mexico's bicentennial, Mayor Denny Doyle announced Friday that the taxpayer-funded party on Sept. 16 will be expanded to recognize other Latin American countries.

Doyle in an interview with The Oregonian on Thursday said he was fully committed to the Mexican celebration and would not make any changes.

"It is what it is," he said. "Two, three hours. We'll have a good time."

But Doyle in a statement Friday said the city isn't just celebrating Mexico's independence anymore. He said Beaverton has broadened the newly named event -- "Year of the Bicentennial" -- to also recognize independence for Argentina, Chile and Colombia.

"We shouldn't have singled one place out," said Holly Thompson, a program coordinator for Beaverton. "We want everyone to feel welcome."

Beaverton's decision to spend up to $6,000 on the event rankled local commentator Lars Larson and later Fox News' Bill O'Reilly. They criticized city leadership for spending money celebrating another country's independence but not allocating funds for the Fourth of July.
