How utterly sensible
LANSING, Mich. (AP) — A November ballot proposal will give Michigan voters the chance to decide if public officials should be banned from holding office for 20 years after certain felony convictions.
Proposal 2 comes after high profile cases involving former Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick and former Detroit City Councilwoman Monica Conyers. But the proposal would apply statewide to public officials at all levels of government.
The measure would ban anyone from being elected or appointed to any state or local elective office if they’ve been convicted of certain felonies in the previous 20 years. It would apply to felonies involving dishonesty, deceit, fraud or a breach of public trust connected to the person’s government job.
