12 shot across city

Chicago police arrived at a West Side house party about 3:30 a.m. Sunday and found a chaotic scene where two people had been shot minutes earlier.

About 100 people people lingered in the 1300 block of North Latrobe Avenue in the North Austin neighborhood, some yelling, but police said they offered "little cooperation."

A 22-year-old man and a 26-year-old woman were shot here about 3:30 a.m. in the backyard of a ranch-style brick home where people had been partying.

Police hung tape from the iron fence next to the home, around a tree in the parkway and back toward the home. Yellow tape also crisscrossed the gangway leading to the yard, which was illuminated by security lights attached to the garage.

The man, shot in the head and shoulder, was taken to Loyola University Medical Center in critical condition. The woman went to West Suburban Hospital with a graze wound to her calf, and she's in good condition.

While an officer searched the front yard for shell casings, a woman stepped out of a neighboring home and asked if the man survived.

"Thank God," she said, after a supervisor told her the man was still alive.

The two were among 12 people shot since 11 a.m. Saturday, including four teens wounded in a small section of the city's South Side bordered by 67th and 79th Streets on the north and south and Ashland Avenue and the Dan Ryan Expressway on the east and west.

Details from those four incidents:

• A 17-year-old boy was shot blocks from where police shot a 17-year-old boy in the Gresham neighborhood hours earlier Saturday night. He was shot in the leg about 10:50 p.m. Saturday while he was in the 7900 block of South Loomis Boulevard and was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center, police said.
• About the same time, someone inside a dark SUV shot a 16-year-old boy while he stood on a sidewalk in the 7000 block of South Vincennes Avenue in the Englewood neighborhood, police said. He was taken to John H. Stroger, Jr. Hospital of Cook County and is in stable condition, Chicago Police Department News Affairs Officer Hector Alfaro said.
• Earlier Saturday, a 15-year-old boy was shot in the 7000 block of South Elizabeth Street, also in Englewood. The boy was shot about 11 a.m. and taken to Comer Children's Hospital with a wound to his back. He's in serious condition.
• A 19-year-old woman was also shot Saturday afternoon, about 3:45 p.m. in the 6700 block of South Bishop Street in Englewood. She was taken to Stroger hospital, police said.

Elsewhere across the city, a man was shot in the 2200 block of West 71st Street in the West Englewood neighborhood about 4:35 a.m. He drove to his home, on the 7200 block of South Albany in the Marquette Park neighborhood, and was taken from there to Holy Cross Hospital in stable condition, News Affairs Officer Robert Perez said.

A 33-year-old man was shot in the head and chest about 5:15 a.m. Sunday after getting into an argument in the 500 block of East 75th Street, Perez said. The man was shot in his head and "lower extremities" and was taken from the Park Manor neighborhood to Stroger Hospital in good condition.

Another man in his 20s was shot in the abdomen after 3 a.m. in the 4700 block of South Hamlin Street in the Archer Heights neighborhood on the Southwest Side. It's not clear what hospital he went to. Police said he's expected to recover from his wounds.

Someone shot a 29-year-old man who was standing in the 100 block of East 58th Street near Indiana Avenue in the Washington Park neighborhood about 2:20 a.m. Sunday, police said. He was shot in the back and is in stable condition at Northwestern Memorial Hospital, Alfaro said.

A 20-year-old man was shot by someone in a dark sedan about 1 a.m. in the 2100 block of Wood Street in the Heart of Chicago neighborhood, police said. Police said the man was asked "What’s up," with no mention of gang salutation or inquiry into his own possible gang affiliation before someone pointed a revolver at him and opened fire. A friend drove him to Stroger hospital, where his condition has stabilized, Alfaro said.

A 22-year-old man walked into Our Lady of the Resurrection Hospital with a gunshot wound to his arm and told police he was shot about 9:45 p.m. near the intersection of Wrightwood and Kildare avenues in the Belmont Gardens neighborhood on the Northwest Side, Alfaro said. He was riding in his car when he heard a gunshot after hearing someone yell at him from the street. His car window was shot out and he drove himself to the hospital, Alfaro said.

This will never end until the good people of Chicago start giving up the criminals. They are victims of their own "Don't Snitch" mentality.
