(HOUSTON) – The loss ofMalaysia Airlines flight 17 may lead to changes on how American airliners get to their international destinations.
Houston Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee says this incident makes clear that all air space isn’t safe, and we might want to think carefully about where we fly.
“Airlines that are under our flag, we must assess how they travel internationally,” Jackson Lee said. “We owe that to the American people.”

But Jackson Lee says American planes will inevitably fly over some conflicted countries.
“As you well know, Israel is in conflict and we have a strong tie with Israel, and our flights are still going into Israel,” Jackson Lee said. “I wouldn’t want to have a broad statement because we have alliances with many countries.”
But she says what has happened in the sky over Ukraine has created an international crisis, and as a member of the Congressional Transportation Security Committee, she plans to call for hearings here on the disaster.
