Selective outrage
Shootings on the South, West and Southwest sides left at least two people dead and five people hurt overnight, including three people shot, one fatally, in a single attack in the Gresham neighborhood, according to police.
The Gresham shooting happened about 10:25 p.m. in the 7800 block of South Winchester Avenue on the South Side, police said.
A 16-year-old girl and two men, ages 20 and 26, were standing on the sidewalk when at least two people stepped out of a dark vehicle and started shooting, police said.
The 20-year-old was shot multiple times and was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where he was pronounced dead at 4:34 a.m., according to the Cook County medical examiner's office. The man has not been officially identified, pending notification of next of kin.
The girl was hit in the arm and taken to Holy Cross Hospital, where her condition was stabilized, police said. The 26-year-old, who was hit in the arm and the leg, was taken to John H. Stroger, Jr. Hospital of Cook County, where his condition was stabilized.
The second fatal shooting occurred about 11:35 p.m. Monday in the 800 block of South Central Park Avenue in the Homan Square neighborhood on the West Side, according to Chicago Police Department News Affairs Officer Jose Estrada. After receiving a report of shots being fired in the area, police arrived to find a 27-year-old man lying in the street with a gunshot wound to the chest, Estrada said. He was transported to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 12:14 a.m., according to the medical examiner's office.
The man was identified as Seadl Commings, of the 3600 block of West Polk Street, according to the medical examiner's office. Estrada said that no one is in custody and that Area North detectives are investigating what police believe is a gang-related incident because the victim is a documented gang member.
