When the law protects fraudsters over law abiding people

Airbnb squatters leave apartment in California

The Desert Sun, Calif., woman who was plagued by squatters after renting her one-bedroom condo on Airbnb has finally gotten rid of the vermin.
The squatters — brothers Maksym and Denys Pashanin — are officially gone, the condo’s “elated” owner, Cory Tschogl, told The Post.
Tschogl isn’t sure exactly when the bloodsuckers vamoosed, but after scouting the place for weeks with the help of neighbors and her dad, who lives nearby, she finally changed the locks, she said.
“I’m just hoping they’re not off to their next victim,” Tschogl said of the brothers, who have been evicted before.
Tschogl’s rental nightmare, which set off a national debate about the risks of the so-called sharing economy, started in July when Maksym, the official Airbnb renter, stopped paying his rent.
When Tschogl threatened to cut off his electricity, Pashanin threatened to press charges, arguing that he had tenants rights under California law because he had been living there more than 30 days.
The brothers caused a simultaneous uproar on start-up Web site Kickstarter when it emerged that they were raising money for a new video game despite failing to follow through on promises on their first project , which earned them a cool $40,000 last year.
