Local journalist Charnice Milton killed in DC shooting
WASHINGTON (WUSA9) -- A local reporter in D.C. was shot and killed while returning home from an assignment Wednesday night.
Charnice Milton, 27, was found suffering from a gunshot wound in the 2700 block of Good Hope Road in Southeast, D.C. around 9:40 p.m. She was taken to the hospital where she died.
Milton was caught in a crossfire and was not the shooter's intended target, D.C. police said.
She was an accomplished young woman and was well respected by her peers in her role as a reporter. She was also a beloved daughter.
"What does one feel but sadness and emptiness. You just lost the most precious cargo that Gods ever given you," said Ken McClendon, the victim's father.
McClendon and Milton's mother, Francine, are devastated about the loss of their wonderful daughter.
"She had a condition of asbergers, and there were individuals who never thought she would get passed kindergarten," said Francine. "But she graduated with honors and shes always been a miracle and blessing."
Milton graduated both high school and college with honors, earning a masters in communications at Syracuse and sang in the church choir on Sunday mornings.
Writing is where Milton really found her voice. She reported for publications such as The Hillrag and Capital Community News.
"She was an excellent reporter and incredibly intrepid, she would go anywhere" Andrew Lightman, managing editor of CCN, told WUSA9.
D.C. police said they believe the shooter could have been on a dirt bike.
Police say there were witnesses near the shooting who could help provide information but have not come forward. They are pleading for anyone at the scene of Wednesday night's shooting to contact them and any tips can be made anonymously.
