Teens try carjacking 54-year-old man in Chicago. Turns out he’s an ex-Chicago cop—and isn’t playing.

Ricky Fobbs, 54, was on a visit to Chicago with his girlfriend to see family and friends, and was simply unloading luggage from his car in front of a hotel Friday evening.
Unfortunately, Fobbs’ car was running — and with that a 15-year-old boy hopped into the driver’s seat and tried to take off, police told the Chicago Sun-Times.
But the carjacker had no idea who he was messing with.
Fobbs not only is a retired Chicago cop who spent 20 years on the force, he’s also presently working as a Texas Ranger based in Dallas, WBBM-TV reported.
“My reaction was I gotta stop him,” he told the station. “I chased down the car, snatched the passenger and jumped in the car.”
And things only heated up from there.
“When he reached once for his pocket, I grabbed his hand and and did a wrist-lock on his hand,” Fobbs added to WBBM.
Cellphone video shot by a bystander shows Fobbs on top of the suspect after he dragged him from the car, the station said.
“A lot of grappling, take-down moves to keep him from squirming and from resisting,” the former Windy City officer told WBBM.
Could it get any better?
Why, yes it could. While Fobbs was pinning down the carjacker, the suspect’s accomplices tried to run Fobbs over, WGN-TV reported. Seems they were using another stolen vehicle in the attempted carjacking, police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi told the Sun-Times.
But WGN said dozens of people jumped in to help — including a man in a wheelchair — and blocked the car from hitting Fobbs.
“You see the citizens holding the guy’s leg,” Fobbs’ girlfriend Sherry Randle told WBBM, pointing at cellphone video of the incident.
Was Fobbs’ girlfriend surprised by his reaction?
Nope. “I really don’t expect less,” she told WBBM. “I know his background and how passionate he is about his friends and family and people in general.”
What happened to the culprits?
The 15-year-old and two other boys — ages 14 and 17 — were arrested and charged with felony counts of unlawful possession of a stolen vehicle, vehicular hijacking and attempted aggravated battery using a deadly weapon, police told the Sun-Times.
In addition, the 15- and 14-year-old boys also face felony counts of aggravated battery in a public place, police told the paper, adding that the 15-year-old faces a felony charge of unlawful vehicular invasion.
Think the kids learned any lessons afterward?
One would hope so, but for one of the suspects — the answer was most definitely no.
Less than 48 hours after being released, one of the teens charged in the Fobbs carjacking was arrested again Sunday night with a gun in another stolen car, Guglielmi told the Sun-Times.
