Actress Kristen Bell, who played the voice of Anna in Disney’s “Frozen,” argued there are plots points in the 1930s classic “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs” that could be problematic for young children.
Mrs. Bell, who has two young daughters with her husband, actor Dax Shepard, told Parents magazine that she points out those problems every time she reads the book with her children.
“Don’t you think that it’s weird that the prince kisses Snow White without her permission?” she said she asks her daughters. “Because you can not kiss someone if they’re sleeping!”
Ms. Bell, who is working on a children’s book herself, also takes issue with Snow White accepting food from strangers.
“Every time we close Snow White I look at my girls and ask, ‘Don’t you think it’s weird that Snow White didn’t ask the old witch why she needed to eat the apple? Or where she got that apple?’” she said.
“I say, ‘I would never take food from a stranger, would you?’ And my kids are like, ‘No!’ And I’m like, ‘OK, I’m doing something right.’”
Mrs. Bell is the second actress to speak out against Disney classics this week. On “The Ellen DeGeneres Show,” Keira Knightley said she won’t let her 3-year-old daughter watch “Cinderella” or “The Little Mermaid.”
“Cinderella, banned, because, you know, she waits around for a rich guy to rescue her,” she said. And women should never “give your voice up for a man,” she said of “The Little Mermaid.”
