Vote fraud
Texas Governor Greg Abbott promised an investigation after an undercover Project Veritas video showed election officials admitting “tons” of non-citizens were voting in Texas.
The Project Veritas video caught the attention of the Republican governor who vowed to get to the bottom of what appeared to be election officials encouraging non-citizens to vote.
In the video released Tuesday, a Project Veritas undercover journalist asked a Texas poll worker identified as Deborah Brooks if her “DREAMer” boyfriend could vote since he is registered to vote and has a driver’s license.
“If he has his ID that’s all he needs. If he’s registered,” Brooks responded.
“Right. It doesn’t matter that he’s not a citizen?” the undercover journalist asked, adding, “I saw some mess on the internet that it’s not legal for him to vote because…”
“No. Don’t pay any attention to that. Bring him up here,” Brooks could be heard replying on the video.
When the journalist asked if there was an “issue with DACA people voting,” another election official identified as Pam Nash, responded, “No, you tell him no, we got a lot of ’em.”
Abbott, who was re-elected governor of Texas, defeating former Dallas County Sheriff Lupe Valdez reacted to the video in a tweet, promising that “illegal votes will be tossed out and wrongdoers will be prosecuted.”
“I can testify to this video’s authenticity. This was recorded on Election Day in Texas,” Project Veritas founder James O’Keefe replied to Abbott.
But Travis County Clerk Dana DeBeauvoir clarified that the election official in the video “….clearly intends to follow the law, indicating who is legally able to vote.”
She also noted that DACA recipients can become eligible to vote after they become citizens.
However, DeBeauvoir pointed out some potential violations by Project Veritas.
“Also clear is that Project Veritas violated state election law that prohibits filming in the polling place and the County Clerk will refer this behavior for investigation and prosecution,” DeBeauvoir said, according to KVUE-TV.
Travis County chief deputy clerk Ronald Morgan, Jr. echoed the sentiments saying the video is “distorting reality” as poll workers did their jobs, according to the Statesman.
“It’s unfortunate that the governor has chosen to publicize the work of an alt-right, fringe group run by a convicted criminal to score cheap political points at the expense of poll workers,” Morgan said, “particularly, when really this just serves as him perpetuating rumors on social media.”
Twitter users weighed in on the video but appeared to back Abbott in his promise to investigate.
