"It's the correct thing that the charges were dropped," Rep. Waters said to Terri Seymour of Extra.
"First of all, we probably will never know all of the details," she continued. "We've heard a lot of information. No one was hurt — that is, physically, killed, shot — he never committed a crime before, he forfeited the bail and it's this kind of situation where they close the case all over the country every day, I learned. This is not unusual."
Waters was being honored with the Chairman's Award from the NAACP when she made the comments. Smollett had also been a recipient of the award in 2016.
Smollett had been charged with 16 felony counts in relation to filing a false police report about a racist and homophobic attack that he allegedly faked. Many were shocked when all of those charges were dropped and he was allowed to walk free after forfeiting a $10,000 bond and being recognized for community service.
