Fugitive eyed in pawn shop murder, rape caught in Brooklyn
A dangerous fugitive nabbed in Brooklyn for stealing a woman’s car murdered a pawn shop owner and raped a child in North Carolina two days prior, Manhattan prosecutors said Thursday.
Kendrick Gregory, 21, stood silently in a yellow T-shirt with his hands cuffed and legs shackled as Assistant District Attorney Jennifer Kirkland chronicled his shocking two-day crime spree, eliciting gasps from the courtroom.
“He stole a car Sunday morning, shot someone in the back, stole money from him and later on that day went to a pawn shop and murdered the owner of that shop,” the prosecutor said. “[Then] he kidnapped a 15-year-old child and raped her.”
“He led police on a chase through Raleigh, North Carolina, where he was basically able to elude capture and he made his way up here to New York,” Kirkland said.
Gregory allegedly stole a Honda Pilot from the corner of Warren Street and Broadway in lower Manhattan on Tuesday when a woman left her keys in the car while dashing into a bank.
She called cops, who tracked the car through GPS to Cobble Hill, Brooklyn, where Gregory was caught behind the wheel with two loaded firearms, including one he’d stolen from the slain pawn shop owner.
Gregory had one handgun tucked in his waist and another under the passenger seat of the Honda. He was slapped with two counts of grand larceny and two counts of criminal possession of a weapon.
Prosecutors said he was expected to be extradited shortly to North Carolina, where he faces charges of murder, attempted murder, kidnapping, rape, robbery, endangering the welfare of a child and grand theft auto.
In New York, he faces two counts of grand larceny and two counts of criminal possession of a weapon. Judge Denise Dominguez ordered Gregory held without bail. He’s due back in court Sept. 4.
