A group of scientists recently put out a new study confirming the 15-year “hiatus” in global warming. That study made headlines, but what went largely unnoticed was a major admission made by the paper’s authors: the climate models were wrong.
“There is this mismatch between what the climate models are producing and what the observations are showing,” John Fyfe, Canadian climate modeler and lead author of the new paper, told Nature. “We can’t ignore it.”
“Reality has deviated from our expectations – it is perfectly normal to try and understand this difference,” Ed Hawkins, co-author of the study and United Kingdom climate scientist, echoed in a blog post.
This is a huge admission by climate scientists and a big victory for skeptics of man-made global warming who have for years been pointing to a mismatch between climate model predictions and actual temperature observations.
“Overall, the paper is an admission by prominent members of the ‘mainstream’ scientific community that the earth’s surface temperature over the past two decades or so has not evolved in a way that was well-anticipated by either the scientific community and/or the climate models they rely on,” Chip Kappenberger, climate scientist at the libertarian Cato Institute, told The Daily Caller News foundation.
“Something that the skeptic have been pointing out for years,” Knappenberger said.
In a recent paper, Michaels and Knappenberger compared observed global surface temperature warming rates since 1950 to predictions made by 108 climate models used by government climate scientists. What they found was the models projected much higher warming rates than actually occurred.
Michaels and Knappenberger aren’t alone. Satellite-derived temperature readings have shown a “hiatus” in global warming for at least the last 18 years, despite rising carbon dioxide emissions.
While some scientists have tried to discredit satellite readings, they have been unable to explain the lack of significant warming in recent years.
Christy and his colleague Roy Spencer compile satellite-derived temperature readings at the University of Alabama, Huntsville. Their satellite data has shown no warming for about two decades, and has been cited by researchers skeptical of claims of catastrophic global warming.
“The bulk atmospheric temperature is where the signal is the largest,” Christy said in the hearing, referring to the greenhouse gas effect. “We have measurements for that — it doesn’t match up with the models.”
“Because this result challenges the current theory of greenhouse warming in relatively straightforward fashion, there have been several well-funded attacks on those of us who build and use such datasets and on the datasets themselves,” Christy said.
Now, skepticism seems to have won the day — at least in terms of convincing other scientists there’s a big problem with climate models.
Fyfe’s study — which was co-authored by Michael Mann of “hockey stick” curve fame — contradicts a study by National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) scientists claiming there was no global warming hiatus.
“Overall, there is compelling evidence that there has been a temporary slowdown in observed global surface warming,” Hawkins wrote in a blog post about the study, noting “the most recent observed 15-year trends are all positive, but lower than most previous similar trends in the past few decades” which is a “clear demonstration that the rate of change has slowed since its peak.”
But even with the admission, some skeptics are still critical because the study’s authors employed research methods they have been critical of in the past.
“All of this said, the authors used techniques to demonstrate a slowdown, that when employed by the skeptics, are harshly criticized,” Knappenberger said. “This seems to me to indicate that the mainstream community gives a free pass to some researchers more so than others.”

Qadri's funeral will be held on Tuesday at Liaquat Bagh park in nearby Rawalpindi, where large numbers of mourners are expected.
Prison officials said he was executed at 04:30 local time (23:30 GMT) at Adiala jail in Rawalpindi, near the capital, Islamabad.
Qadri, who had trained as an elite police commando and was assigned to Taseer as his bodyguard, shot the politician at an Islamabad market in January 2011. He was sentenced to death later that year.
He claimed it was his religious duty to kill the minister, who was an outspoken critic of Pakistan's harsh blasphemy laws and supported liberal reforms.
Analysis: M Ilyas Khan, BBC News, Islamabad
Mumtaz Qadri's hanging has come as a surprise to many who thought such a move could spark a severe backlash from the religious lobby.
The hanging comes amid two recent developments that have already incensed religious groups.
In January, the Punjab government banned preaching in educational institutions by Tablighi Jamaat, a proselytising and revivalist movement. And earlier this month it enacted a law that provides for a helpline for women to report abuses by their husbands and others.
Amid this atmosphere, the move to hang Qadri indicates a growing confidence of the government in taming the street power of religious groups, which the military has long been accused of using to control politicians at home and fight its proxy wars abroad.
One reason may be the fact that most hard-line groups adhere to the Deobandi school and would be loath to lionise Qadri, an adherent of the rival Barelvi sect. But a more important reason seems to be the military's new-found willingness to curb militant groups that have a domestic agenda.
Pakistan has seen Islamist groups grow in influence in recent years and several high profile blasphemy cases.
When it came to Qadri's court case, many lawyers argued that Qadri's actions were religiously justified and refused to take part in the prosecution, chief prosecutor Saif ul Malook told the BBC.
"There was a time when nobody was ready to prosecute this accused person and it was really a challenge and I did it only to protect the rule of law," he said.
At his first court hearing Qadri was showered with rose petals by supporters. He never expressed any regret for the killing. His brother appeared to reassert that when he told the AFP news agency about his final meeting with Qadri.
"I have no regrets," Malik Abid told AFP. "We started crying, but he hugged us and chanted 'God is great,'" he added.
In May, just months after Taseer was gunned down, Pakistan's Minorities Minister Shahbaz Bhatti, the cabinet's only Christian, was shot dead by gunmen who ambushed his car.
That August, Salman Taseer's son, Shahbaz Taseer, was abducted in Lahore. His whereabouts are still unclear.
Blasphemy is an extremely sensitive issue in Pakistan and critics argue that blasphemy laws are often misused to settle personal scores and unfairly target minorities.
Who was Salman Taseer?
The 2011 murder of Taseer, who was the governor of Punjab, was one of Pakistan's most high-profile assassinations.
He was one of the most prominent liberal politicians in the country and a close associate of Asif Ali Zardari, who was then the president.
Known to be an outspoken critic of the country's harsh blasphemy laws, arguing that they discriminated against religious minorities, and sought liberal reforms.
He had called for a pardon for Asia Bibi, a Christian woman who was sentenced to death in 2010 for insulting the Prophet Muhammad.
The White House is quietly pushing for an increase in refugees from Syria, despite new concerns raised by state and county officials that federal help is often missing when they arrive.
President Obama's assistant for immigration policy told a task force set up by the National Association of Counties that the U.S. is eyeing a bigger role to help alleviate the growing crisis.
"We want to make sure that we can increase our numbers of refugees that are able to settle here," Felicia Escobar said. "The need globally is so, so, so massive right now, given all the displacement and conflict around the world, but we also know that we have to do it in a way that's smart."
The issue has become a flashpoint in the presidential race and among governors who are concerned that Washington won't properly vet the refugees to weed out terrorists.
But locally, it's an issue of money and support. Sean Conway, a county commissioner from Weld County in Greeley, Colo., said he has had to "fight" with the State Department to get promised services such as healthcare and interpreters. Worse, he added, "Many times we don't even know that relocation is taking place until it's going on."
By law, the administration can let in some 10,000 Syrian refugees a year, though fewer have been. There are an estimated 4.2 million Syrian refugees.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan dismissed the release from jail of two Turkish journalists accused of spying. He said he would neither "respect" nor "obey" the decision.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan made his comments following a recent constitutional court ruling saying that the detention of two newspaper journalists had violated their rights.
Can Dundar, editor-in-chief of "Cumhuriyet" and his Ankara bureau chief, Erdem Gul, had been released pending trial on February 26, following the constitutional court ruling. Their arrest last November drew international condemnation and concern about media freedom in Turkey.
"I will remain silent to the decision the court has given. But I don't need to accept it. I want to make that clear. I don't obey or respect the decision," Erdogan told reporters in Istanbul.
"This has nothing to do with press freedom. This is a case of spying," he said.
"Cumhuriyet" had published video footage online purporting to show Turkey's state intelligence agency MIT helping send weapons to fighters associated with the self-styled "Islamic State" (IS) in Syria. The two journalists were charged with publishing material in violation of state security "for espionage purposes" and intentionally aiding an "armed terrorist organization."
A personal vendetta
Turkey's Constitutional Court remains as one of the few public institutions in the country that are not under Erdogan's control.
Can Dundar was released following the ruling, but is still awaiting trial in March
The court has in the past issued several rulings that went against the president, notably in May 2014, when it ruled that a ban on YouTube was unconstitutional.
The two journalists still face possible life sentences at a trial due to start on March 25. They are banned from leaving the country until the end of the hearings.
Erdogan had personally laid the charges against the two journalists and said that he would "not forgive such reporting," vowing that Dundar would "pay the price" for reporting on the story.
The legal battle between the FBI and Apple is getting far more attention, but another privacy case has enormous implications for California schoolchildren and their families.
A federal judge in Sacramento ordered the release of a staggering amount of protected personal information for 10 million students to attorneys for a nonprofit group suing the state.
These records include Social Security numbers, home addresses, grades, test scores, behavioral disciplinary reports, even medical and mental health information.
It’s an identity thief’s dream — and a nightmare for anyone else.
The sweeping order, issued by U.S. District Judge Kimberly Mueller, covers anyone who has attended a K-12 school in California since the beginning of 2008, including students no longer enrolled in the state’s public schools. Lawyers for a group called California Concerned Parents Association contend the state isn’t providing adequate educational services for special-needs children and say they need the data to help prove their case.
We aren’t familiar with the particulars of the 5-year-old lawsuit, so we make no judgments about the merits of the case.
California’s constitution guarantees a free and equal public education for all children, and the federal Individuals with Disabilities Education Act requires states to evaluate students suspected of having disabilities, including learning disabilities and to provide appropriate services.
If California is shortchanging any students, the state should be held accountable. Lawyers for the parents group say they need the state Department of Education data to complete a statistical analysis of services being provided for special-needs children. Mueller’s order says the information won’t be made public, and spokesmen for the group promise that the data will be secure.
That’s not satisfactory, not when data breaches are routine.
“Data is like toothpaste,” Steven Liao, an IT expert and Bay Area parent, told the San Jose Mercury-News. “Once you squeeze it out of the bottle, people are going to put it on 10 different toothbrushes and scrub like crazy to see what they find. Then they’re responsible for putting the foam back into the tube, and ensure there’s no spray, not one dot, left on the mirror? That’s impossible.”
There must be a way to assess the state’s compliance with the federal disability law without trampling on the privacy and personal security of millions of children. We see no reason why names, Social Security numbers and other identifying information cannot be redacted, or why a random sample of anonymous records wouldn’t be sufficient, and Mueller didn’t explain why she issued such an expansive order.
Don’t bother asking. The court isn’t accepting phone calls about this case.
We gleaned that bit of information from an objection form that parents can submit to the court by April 1. Failing to object “will be deemed a waiver of your right to object to the disclosure of your or your child’s protected personal information and records,” the form says. But the judge’s order doesn’t say whether she will block the release of records if parents object.
You can download the form at www.cde.ca.gov/re/di/ws/documents/form2016jan26.pdf
School officials around the state are urging parents to file objections. If enough of them do, maybe Mueller will find a less invasive way to resolve this lawsuit.
Keep these in mind as you contemplate the direction of the American government over the past 50 years and especially since the Obama election.
The Goals of Communism
(as read into the congressional record January 10, 1963, from "The Naked Communist" by Cleon Skousen)
1. U.S. acceptance of coexistence as the only alternative to atomic war.
2. U.S. willingness to capitulate in preference to engaging in atomic war.
3. Develop the illusion that total disarmament of the United States would be a demonstration of moral strength.
4. Permit free trade between all nations regardless of Communist affiliation and regardless of whether or not items could be used for war.
5. Extension of long-term loans to Russia and Soviet satellites.
6. Provide American aid to all nations regardless of Communist domination.
7. Grant recognition of Red China. Admission of Red China to the U.N.
8. Set up East and West Germany as separate states in spite of Khrushchev's promise in 1955 to settle the German question by free elections under supervision of the U.N.
9. Prolong the conferences to ban atomic tests because the United States has agreed to suspend tests as long as negotiations are in progress.
10. Allow all Soviet satellites individual representation in the U.N.
11. Promote the U.N. as the only hope for mankind. If its charter is rewritten, demand that it be set up as a one-world government with its own independent armed forces. (Some Communist leaders believe the world can be taken over as easily by the U.N. as by Moscow. Sometimes these two centers compete with each other as they are now doing in the Congo.)
12. Resist any attempt to outlaw the Communist Party.
13. Do away with all loyalty oaths.
14. Continue giving Russia access to the U.S. Patent Office.
15. Capture one or both of the political parties in the United States.
16. Use technical decisions of the courts to weaken basic American institutions by claiming their activities violate civil rights.
17. Get control of the schools. Use them as transmission belts for socialism and current Communist propaganda. Soften the curriculum. Get control of teachers' associations. Put the party line in textbooks.
18. Gain control of all student newspapers.
19. Use student riots to foment public protests against programs or organizations which are under Communist attack.
20. Infiltrate the press. Get control of book-review assignments, editorial writing, policymaking positions.
21. Gain control of key positions in radio, TV, and motion pictures.
22. Continue discrediting American culture by degrading all forms of artistic expression. An American Communist cell was told to "eliminate all good sculpture from parks and buildings, substitute shapeless, awkward and meaningless forms."
23. Control art critics and directors of art museums. "Our plan is to promote ugliness, repulsive, meaningless art."
24. Eliminate all laws governing obscenity by calling them "censorship" and a violation of free speech and free press.
25. Break down cultural standards of morality by promoting pornography and obscenity in books, magazines, motion pictures, radio, and TV.
26. Present homosexuality, degeneracy and promiscuity as "normal, natural, healthy."
27. Infiltrate the churches and replace revealed religion with "social" religion. Discredit the Bible and emphasize the need for intellectual maturity which does not need a "religious crutch."
28. Eliminate prayer or any phase of religious expression in the schools on the ground that it violates the principle of "separation of church and state."
29. Discredit the American Constitution by calling it inadequate, old-fashioned, out of step with modern needs, a hindrance to cooperation between nations on a worldwide basis.
30. Discredit the American Founding Fathers. Present them as selfish aristocrats who had no concern for the "common man."
31. Belittle all forms of American culture and discourage the teaching of American history on the ground that it was only a minor part of the "big picture." Give more emphasis to Russian history since the Communists took over.
32. Support any socialist movement to give centralized control over any part of the culture--education, social agencies, welfare programs, mental health clinics, etc.
33. Eliminate all laws or procedures which interfere with the operation of the Communist apparatus.
34. Eliminate the House Committee on Un-American Activities.
35. Discredit and eventually dismantle the FBI.
36. Infiltrate and gain control of more unions.
37. Infiltrate and gain control of big business.
38. Transfer some of the powers of arrest from the police to social agencies. Treat all behavioral problems as psychiatric disorders which no one but psychiatrists can understand.
39. Dominate the psychiatric profession and use mental health laws as a means of gaining coercive control over those who oppose Communist goals.
40. Discredit the family as an institution. Encourage promiscuity and easy divorce.
41. Emphasize the need to raise children away from the negative influence of parents. Attribute prejudices, mental blocks and retarding of children to suppressive influence of parents.
42. Create the impression that violence and insurrection are legitimate aspects of the American tradition; that students and special-interest groups should rise up and use united force to solve economic, political or social problems.
43. Overthrow all colonial governments before native populations are ready for self-government.
44. Internationalize the Panama Canal.
45. Repeal the Connally reservation so the United States cannot prevent the World Court from seizing jurisdiction over nations and individuals alike.
