Chinese charged over Kenya 'railway scam'

Three Chinese nationals have been charged with attempting to bribe investigators working on an alleged ticketing scam in a massive Kenyan railway project. 

Some $10,000 (£8,000) a day was being stolen in the scheme, local media say.

Officers were allegedly offered a $5,000 bribe, the prosecutor says. 

The $3bn Chinese-funded and operated railway line is Kenya's biggest infrastructure project since independence in 1963.

It has, however, been hit by scandals since it launched in May 2017.

The three Chinese nationals: Li Gen, head of transport, Li Xiaowu, security manager, and Sun Xin, staff member, work for China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC).

They were arrested on Friday as they attempted to bribe investigators, but it is unclear how long the alleged fraud had been going on. They deny the allegations.

They appeared before a judge in the port city of Mombasa who ruled that they remain in custody until their bail hearing is heard on 30 November. 

The alleged ticket fraud involved triggering refunds and diverting the money elsewhere, according to a report in the Daily Nation newspaper.

The loss of an estimated $10,000 a day is almost a third of daily earnings from last year's passenger service.

Despite the fanfare during the launch of the railway, the project has been hit by several scandals. 

In August, government officials were accused of paying more than $2m in compensation to private firms which falsely claimed to own land through which the line ran.

There have also been allegations of racism and discrimination against Kenyan staff by Chinese managers. 

The project's viability has been repeatedly questioned, with critics pointing to the loss of about $100m in its first year of operation.

It was also condemned by wildlife groups as the line runs through the Nairobi National Park and Tsavo National Park in south-eastern Kenya.

At its launch, President Uhuru Kenyatta hailed the new railway line as a new chapter in the East African state's history. 

The line runs between the port city of Mombasa and the capital, Nairobi, and construction was completed 18 months early.

It is supposed to eventually connect landlocked South Sudan, eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, Rwanda, Burundi and Ethiopia to the Indian Ocean.

The Daily Caller has an exclusive report tonight that is very troubling, and, unfortunately in alignment with a previous suspicion CTH shared when it was first announced that John Huber was scheduled to testify to congress on December 5th.

According to the Daily Caller: FBI agents raided the home of a recognized Department of Justice whistleblower who privately delivered documents pertaining to the Clinton Foundation and Uranium One to a government watchdog, according to the whistleblower’s attorney.

The Justice Department’s inspector general was informed that the documents show that federal officials failed to investigate potential criminal activity regarding former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, the Clinton Foundation and Rosatom, the Russian company that purchased Uranium One, a document reviewed by The Daily Caller News Foundation alleges.

The delivered documents also show that then-FBI Director Robert Mueller failed to investigate allegations of criminal misconduct pertaining to Rosatom and to other Russian government entities attached to Uranium One, the document reviewed by TheDCNF alleges. Mueller is now the special counsel investigating whether the Trump campaign colluded with Russia during the 2016 election.

“The bureau raided my client to seize what he legally gave Congress about the Clinton Foundation and Uranium One,” the whistleblower’s lawyer, Michael Socarras, told TheDCNF, noting that he considered the FBI’s raid to be an “outrageous disregard” of whistleblower protections.  (continue reading)

Make sure you read the entire article because if the DOJ was intending to throw a bag over the entire Clinton Foundation investigation and cover-it-up, that raid is exactly what they would do. This is presumably the investigation that John Huber was/is controlling.

When congressman Mark Meadows reported that U.S. Attorney John Huber was scheduled to testify on December 5th, 2018, CTH warned:

This could be a troubling indication because: (a) Huber wouldn’t be able to testify about an ongoing criminal investigation; and (b) this framework would infer DOJ officials (above Huber) have made a determination -or agreed with his determination- that no legal liability is possible within the matters Huber reviewed.  (link)

If the reporting of the raid by the Daily Caller is accurate; and given the nature of the timing for that raid; and accepting the at risk elements within the whistleblower case extended beyond Hillary Clinton to Robert Mueller; and noting how the SSCI was the recipient of the information/evidence as transmitted by Michael Horowitz; there is a solid appearance of the DOJ maneuvering to cover-up the underlying DOJ/FBI corruption by seizing -and controlling- all of the evidence.

[Additionally, in the background are the fingerprints of the self-serving quid-pro-quo between DOJ and SSCI] Just sayin’…

If that apparent cover-up perspective is accurate, then so too is THIS.

A cover-up just seems so implausible, because the activity is just so brutally obvious.

How is this level of blatant disregard possible?  Seriously, I really don’t know.  Perhaps these DOJ and FBI officials are genuinely inside a bubble and don’t know the level of information that exists outside DC…. or, maybe they just feel so above the law they simply don’t care.  I don’t understand it either; but it’s happening – regardless.

It would appear there is no limit to what the corrupt Deep State officials will do to hide their unlawful activity; and apparently there’s not an honest person amid the organizations who can stop them.   FUBAR.  Very disturbing.

I hope I’m wrong.

Maybe there’s a valid reason for this FBI raid; if so, I can’t think of one.

New Numbers: 91 Percent of Central American Asylum Seekers Have Bogus Claims

New numbers from the Department of Homeland Security show that just 9 percent of asylum claims made by individuals from Central America turn out to be legitimate. 

"The low statutory requirements and legal loopholes in our laws encourage aliens to claim credible fear at our Southern border knowing they will be promptly released into the interior with work permits pending the determination of their full claim. In recent years, data shows that more than 65 percent of asylum seekers at our border are from Central America – of those 89 percent pass their initial credible-fear interview," DHS spokesperson Katie Waldman released Thursday afternoon. "Yet, the harsh reality is that 31 percent of aliens who pass that initial interview do not even show up for their hearing, while a staggering 40 percent of aliens who pass their initial interview do not even file an application."

"Ultimately, only 9 percent of Northern Triangle petitioners are found eligible for asylum by a judge – leaving 91 percent ineligible for asylum," she continued. "The fact that only 9 percent of those who initially claim asylum are found eligible, indicates that we are expending most of our limited resources – detention space, court space and the time of our asylum officers and immigration judges – denying frivolous or illegitimate claims of asylum from the 9 out of 10 who are found ineligible."

Current U.S. immigration law requires illegal aliens traveling from Central America as a family unit, specifically with children, to be released into the interior of the United States after 20 days of federal detention. 

"Where are those 91 percent today? While some are properly removed from the U.S. by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), many of those who are released on a promise to appear in court disappear into the country’s interior to live and work illegally. In FY17, only 1 percent of the 226,119 removals conducted by ICE were on Alternatives to Detention," Waldman said. 

Meanwhile, thousands of caravan members are still camped out in Tijuana with thousands more along the way. Reporters on the ground, in addition to Border Patrol agents, have repeatedly pointed out the majority of individuals in the caravan are young men who are not legitimately seeking asylum. "What I saw on the border yesterday was not people walking up to Border Patrol agents and asking to claim asylum," San Diego Sector Border Patrol Chief Rodney Scott said during a recent interview with CNN. "One of the groups that I watched and several of them were arrested, they passed 10 or 15 marked Border Patrol units walking west to east. Numerous uniformed personnel as they were chanting, waving a Honduran flag and throwing rocks at the agents. If they were truly asylum seekers, they would have walked up with their hands up and surrendered. That is not what took place."

You can force their idiocy into the light but, you cannot shame them.

A co-host on “The View” became visibly angry Thursday during a discussion after two of her fellow co-hosts pointed out that former President Barack Obama — like current President Donald Trump — used tear gas on migrants at the U.S.-Mexico border.

Admitting that she doesn’t care what Obama did, co-host Sunny Hostin adamantly announced that she wants to focus on what Trump is doing instead.

New York City Police launched a hate-crime investigation Thursday after swastikas and an anti-Semitic slur were spray-painted in red near the entrance to a Jewish Columbia University professor’s office.

What happened?

The vandalism was found around 1 p.m.Wednesday at Columbia University’s Teachers College in Manhattan, according to published reports.

The Columbia Daily Spectator identified the teacher as Elizabeth Midlarsky, who teaches psychology and education. Midlarsky has also written about the Holocaust.

“I was in shock,” Midlarsky told the student newspaper. “I stopped for a moment, because I couldn’t believe what I was seeing.”

In addition to the swastikas, a racial slur was written on the walls.

Identification is required to enter all Teachers College academic buildings, the Columbia Daily Spectator reported. A different staff member entered the area around 11:47 a.m. Wednesday and did report seeing anything unusual.

“We are outraged and horrified by this act of aggression and use of this vile anti-Semitic symbol against a valued member of our community,” Teachers College President Thomas Bailey said in a statement.

He said police are working to “discover the perpetrator of this hateful act.”

Police also told the media they are still looking for suspects.

It’s not the first time the teacher was targeted.

Midlarsky’s office was vandalized in 2007 when a swastika was spray-painted on her door and anti-Semitic fliers were left in her mailbox, the Columbia Daily Spectator reported.

Police did not say if they believe the two crimes are related, according to reports.

What else is going on?

Several anti-Semitic acts have cropped up in recent weeks.

Last week, three swastikas were found over nine days at Cornell University’s campus in Ithaca, New York, the Cornell Daily Sun reported.

Less than two weeks ago, someone spray-painted a red swastika at Duke University in North Carolina on a mural  that honored victims of the Pittsburgh synagogue massacre.

Federal prosecutors have filed hate crime charges against a Pennsylvania man who allegedly stormed a Pittsburgh synagogue in October and killed 11 people. If convicted of a hate crime, the suspect could face the death penalty.

Last month, researchers who study social media reported a spike in anti-Semitic posts on Instagram and Twitter. There were also complaints that not enough was being done to stop it.

According to the FBI, hate crimes have increased more than 17 percent in the U.S. in 2017, marking the third consecutive year the figures have gone up.

Special Counsel Robert Mueller has overseen a nearly two-year-long investigation that has cost tens of millions of dollars and has produced little to no proof of any actual collusion between the then Trump campaign and Russia. Instead, Mueller has filed silly charges against a handful of Russians who bought some Facebook ads, another charge against a secondary Trump campaign affiliate for lying to the FBI, and most notably, gone back a decade to file charges against short-term Trump campaign manager, Paul Manafort, on bank and tax fraud—none of which relates to the current Trump-Russia collusion investigation. It is the Manafort case that has since created growing whispers of abuse of power by Mr. Mueller as he is said to have become increasingly aggressive in trying to get people to lie in order to set the stage for a full on attack against President Trump.

WASHINGTON — A lawyer for Paul Manafort, the president’s onetime campaign chairman, repeatedly briefed President Trump’s lawyers on his client’s discussions with federal investigators after Manafort agreed to cooperate with the special counsel, according to one of Trump’s lawyers and two other people familiar with the conversations.

…Rudolph W. Giuliani, one of the president’s personal lawyers, acknowledged the arrangement on Tuesday and defended it as a source of valuable insights into the special counsel’s inquiry and where it was headed. Such information could help shape a legal defense strategy, and it also appeared to give Trump and his legal advisers ammunition in their public relations effort against the special counsel’s office. For example, Giuliani said, Manafort’s lawyer Kevin M. Downing told him that prosecutors hammered away at whether the president knew about the June 2016 Trump Tower meeting where Russians promised to deliver damaging information on Hillary Clinton to his eldest son, Donald Trump Jr. The president has long denied knowing about the meeting in advance. “He wants Manafort to incriminate Trump,” Giuliani declared of Mueller.

While Downing’s discussions with the president’s team violated no laws, they helped contribute to a deteriorating relationship between lawyers for Manafort and Mueller’s prosecutors, who accused Manafort of holding out on them despite his pledge to assist them in any matter they deemed relevant, according to the people. That conflict spilled into public view on Monday when the prosecutors declared that Manafort had breached his plea deal by lying to them about several subjects.

…On Tuesday morning, Trump unleashed another blistering attack on Mueller, calling him a ‘‘conflicted prosecutor gone rogue’’ who is doing ‘‘TREMENDOUS damage’’ to the criminal justice system. ‘‘Wait until it comes out how horribly & viciously they are treating people, ruining lives for them refusing to lie,’’ Trump said. ‘‘Mueller is a conflicted prosecutor gone rogue. . . . The Fake News Media builds Bob Mueller up as a Saint, when in actuality he is the exact opposite. He is doing TREMENDOUS damage to our Criminal Justice System,” Trump tweeted.

Yesterday’s reports of the Mueller investigation claiming Manafort had broken an earlier plea agreement was the direct result of Mueller learning of Manafort’s agreement with the Trump White House. Mr. Mueller is said to have been caught completely flat-footed by that discovery and panicked by the implication of his allegedly abusive/illegal tactics becoming public knowledge. How ironic would it be that when all is said and done it is Robert Mueller who faces a much more real criminal investigation? President Trump is now giving strong hints that might be exactly where this is all headed.

While speaking Tuesday at Rice University’s Baker Center with author Jon Meacham and former White House chief of staff, James Baker, former President Barack Obama discussed identity politics and its history regarding race in the United States.

Obama said that America, particularly American elites, have had a history of “great smugness” when it comes to wealth and status,

OBAMA: We did not adapt quickly enough to the fact that there were people being left behind. And that frustrations were going to flare up and that all of these changes that were happening were happening really quick, and you had to address them and speak to them.

In those environments, you then start getting a different kind of politics. You start getting politics that’s based on, that person’s not like me. And it must be their fault. You start getting the politics based on a nationalism that’s not pride and country, but hatred for somebody on the other side of the border. And you start getting the kind of politics that does not allow for compromise because it is based on passions and emotions.

BAKER: It’s identity politics.

OBAMA: Which is why, by the way, when I hear people say they don’t like identity politics, I think it’s important to remember that identity politics doesn’t just apply when it’s black people or gay people or women. The folks are really originated identity politics were the folks who said, three-fifths clause and all that stuff. That was identity politics. That’s still out there. Maybe that was a little too controversial for Houston, but Jim Crow was identity politics. That’s where it started.

So, part of what’s happened is that when people feel their status is being jostled and threatened, they react. What I would agree with is that the Washington consensus, whatever you want to call it, got a little too comfortable with — they are looking at GDP numbers and looking at the Internet and everything is looking pretty great, particularly after the Cold War. After what you guys engineered, you had this period of great smugness on the part of America and American elites thinking, “We got this figured out.” … That came back to bite us.
