Almost 2 in 3 NYCHA complexes have broken or tampered doors
Two-thirds of the city’s public housing developments are vulnerable to intruders because so many of the doors are defective, according to a study released Friday.
Investigators for Comptroller Scott Stinger visited 299 of the New York City Housing Authority’s 325 complexes in July and August and found at least one broken or tampered door at 195 of them.
They tested 4,551 main entrances, side doors and rear doors and turned up 1,023 that weren’t secure.
At least one door was unlocked in a majority of the developments — including 89 percent on Staten Island. Moreover, 47 percent of all front entrances surveyed lacked security cameras.
“All New Yorkers should feel safe in their own homes — but hundreds of broken latches, busted locks, and doors held open by chains and rope leave NYCHA families without that basic sense of security,” said Stringer.
NYCHA didn’t dispute the figures in its response.
“We will continue to inspect and repair doors urgently, and ask for our residents’ help in vigilantly reporting door damage whenever they see it,” said NYCHA rep Jasmine Blake.
