Justice Clears DeLay in Abramoff Probe

Former Majority Leader Tom DeLay was the kingpin in the Democrats’ 2006 “culture of corruption” campaign that helped force the Texas Republican out of office—and swept Democrats into power.

But after a lengthy federal probe, the Justice Department has dropped its investigation, according to DeLay’s attorney, Richard Cullen. “The federal investigation of Tom DeLay is over and there will be no charges,” Cullen told Politico.

The Justice Department does not comment publicly on such matters, but Cullen said he was informed last week by Justice Department lawyers that they were no longer pursuing the six-year investigation.

DeLay still faces state charges for allegedly violating Texas campaign finance law.

DeLay, along with several of his former top aides, was under federal scrutiny as part of the broad corruption probe into the activities of former lobbyist Jack Abramoff and his business schemes.

Abramoff was recently released from prison after serving nearly four years for fraud and corruption.

DeLay is the latest lawmaker to be cleared from a federal investigation. Rep. Don Young (R., Alaska) announced earlier this month that the Justice Department was no longer pursuing a federal investigation over his connections to Alaska businessmen charged with bribing local officials.
