Want to know who will always be at the bottom of the economic heap?
MILWAUKEE, Wis. – A pregnant girl was rushed to the hospital after she was involved in a melee involving 30 to 40 students at a high school named in honor of President Obama.
Milwaukee police descended on Barack Obama School of Career and Technical Education at about 2:30 p.m. Wednesday after getting calls that students were brawling, the Journal Sentinel reports.
The large number of people fighting included “outsiders,” according to police.
The pregnant girl was transported to the hospital and while en route, she allegedly kicked a paramedic, who is also pregnant, Fox 6 reports.
After the melee, Milwaukee Public Schools spokesman Tony Tagliavia issued a statement saying, “We are cooperating with the Milwaukee Police Department as it investigates an incident that happened at the school at about 2:30 p.m. We will take appropriate disciplinary action against any student involved.”
No one has been arrested and police say the investigation is “on-going.”
After the brawl, the school released students conducted a “staggered dismissal” of students.
Police say there were no major injuries.
Last November, Media Trackers reported that the school “failed to meet expectations” on state report cards.
According to data from the state Department of Public Instruction, for the 2013-2014 academic year the school, listed as Obama Elementary, scored 39.4 out of 100. On a grading scale, that means Obama Elementary is well below failing. Only 14 schools faired worse on the state report card.
“Fails to Meet Expectations” reads the entry next to the school’s score. Each school’s score is calculated by looking at specific student achievement in areas like reading and math, and the school’s ability to improve student scores, among other things. Obama Elementary had its worst score in reading achievement, which came in at 2.2 out of 50.
The news site notes the school was also used as a polling location in the 2012 election.
